Are You Your Most Authentic Self

I was reading an article and it talked about being authentic. And how quickly you can ruin your reputation. I got to thinking in a world where we can make people believe all sorts of things about us like we have money, get to go to fantastic places, or meet celebrities. I wonder how much we value integrity, honesty, and authenticity. Do we truly have any idea how much value our reputation holds?

What do the Words Mean?

I thought it might be a good idea to cover the basics first like what do these words mean.

  • Integrity-the state of being whole and undivided.
  • Honesty-free of deceit and untruthfulness; sincere.
  • Authentic-of undisputed origin; genuine.

Don’t Talk about Me

How many people have had someone say “don’t talk about me”. I have always wondered why. I would suspect their authenticity / Integrity is not so authentic as they would have others believe. Now I suppose it could be they simply don’t like to be talked about, but I think there is more to it. Oprah Winfrey (1954 – ), in Good Housekeeping, said: “Real integrity is doing the right thing, knowing that nobody’s going to know whether you did it or not.” I think it says it all really. However, what is it God Says?

What Does God Say

In Matthew 5:34-37
But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne;  or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King.  And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black.  All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.

In other words, say what you mean. I do want to stress something here. each of us has the ability to chose to value integrity, honesty, and authenticity.  “Integrity without knowledge is weak and useless, and knowledge without integrity is dangerous and dreadful.” Samuel Johnson (1709 – 1784)
